Abstract
Dramatic reductions in bend and beamsplitter size for low index contrast waveguides can be achieved with properly designed single or multiple air interfaces. For example, over 98% efficiency for both polarization states can be achieved with a single air interface in a 60 degree bend that occupies only 10 μm x 14 μm. For multiple air trench structures, optimization based on a micro-genetic algorithm and FDTD is effective in designing high efficiency bends.
