Abstract

Theoretical investigations are carried out for feedback mechanisms in two-dimensional finite-size photonic crystal (PC) lasers. By comparing close-to-lasing asymmetric and symmetric PCs, this paper demonstrates that the asymmetric PC exhibits a circulating photon-energy flow while the symmetric PC shows a photon-energy flow along straight lines. The asymmetric PC laser can therefore be regarded as oscillating by circulating photons while the symmetric PC laser basically oscillating by Bloch photons which interfere with each other on the same passage.
