Abstract

Er203 is explored as a gain medium for ultra-compact waveguide amplifiers. With sputtered and annealed films, we measure three radiative lifetimes (7, 0.8,0.5 ms) and upconversion coefficients, correlating with three crystalline phases. Gains of > 2.4 dB/cm are indicated from initial measurements.
