Impact of weak index perturbations on 3 dB multi mode interference couplers

Abstract

A weak index perturbation changes the imbalance of 3 dB MMI couplers. A parabolic error of 1 % of the step index gives an imbalance of 1 dB . The imbalance of a fabricated MMI is removed by UV-trimming.
