Optical Components for Future Optical Communication Systems

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Continuous demand for systems with higher and higher information capacity and the potential of direct access to the optical network layer for control and management ensure that components will continue to play a key role in future systems. The paper outlines the current trends in optical communications and the component requirements that these trends are creating. The paper will close with an appraisal of state of the art technologies and devices and their future potential.
