Integration of a tapered waveguide with an electroabsorption multi-quantum well modulator

Abstract

The monolithic integration of a semiconductor laser diode and an optical modulator [ 1,2] is essential for optoelectronic applications such as optical communications and optical computing. On chip integration of various optoelectronic devices requires both the tailoring of band gap of the components on the chip as well as their mode sizes by controlling the composition and refractive index. The integration of a single quantum well (SQW) laser diode and a multi quantum well (MQW) modulator with minimal insertion loss is an essential first step in optoelectronic integration.
