Abstract

The evolution of heterostructure lasers into quantum well graded-barrier (GBH) separate confinement heterostructure lasers has resulted in devices with very low threshold currents. One negative aspect of these lasers is associated with the elliptical shape of the far-field modes and the losses occurring from beam matching into fibers. However, if the heterostructure is used as a waveguide, semiconductor optical amplifier, or electro-optic modulator, the insertion loss in matching into a sub-Ao mode is of critical importance.
