Abstract

Improvement of chip to fiber coupling is a major issue for practical applications Of OEICs. We have previously shown that the use of a multimode coupler can significantly improve the coupling efficiency [1,2]. In spite of the potentially very high coupling efficiencies this approach suffers from some drawbacks: the multimode structure requires regrowth and precise alignment; the previous analysis was one dimensional; lateral guiding issues were not addressed, and compatibility with waveguide detectors has not been investigated.
