Abstract
Recently, periodically segmented waveguides have received considerable attention for applications in efficient second harmonic generation in KTP and LiTaO3 [1-4]. Segmented waveguides are interesting from the point of view of quasi phase matching as the periodic segmentation also leads to periodic domain reversal. Segmented waveguides by themselves are interesting since the effective index of the propagating mode can be controlled by simply varying the duty cycle of the segmentation; the periodic variation along the propagation direction can also be made use in devices requiring grating structures. Such an additional degree of freedom can be used in the efficient design of z variant waveguide devices such as tapered velocity couplers, mode expanders, polarization converters etc. To date no measurements or modeling of graded index segmented waveguides have been reported.
