Abstract

For diffraction gratings, the Fourier modal method is popular, but the eigenmodes in each layer are expensive to calculate. We develop a new method that avoids the eigenvalue problem by computing the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map for each layer. A Chebyshev collocation method is used with a compact fourth order finite difference scheme in the periodic direction to calculate DtN map efficiently.
