Photonic crystal laser threshold analysis using 3D FDTD with a material gain model

Abstract

A derivation of threshold modal gain based on energy conservation and applicable to photonic crystal microcavities is presented. This result is investigated using 3D FDTD simulations which include a spatially varying and dispersive gain model.
