Study Of Brillouin Active Fiber Ring As An Effective Slow Light Device

Abstract

One type of fiber optic slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (sBs) has been investigated extensively. Recent successes have enhanced the possibility of optical controllable pulse delays for applications in optical buffering, data synchronization, optical memory and signal processing. These fiber based delay tunable devices are compatible with today's telecommunication networks. As the maximum delay is proportional to Brillouin gain and inversely proportional to Brillouin linewidth, we would like to report our data on sBs gain and linewidth for potential delay enhancement in fiber rings. The are also issues of the effects of instability of sBs in fiber rings.
