Abstract
We will discuss general mathematical ideas arising in the problems of Laser beam shaping and splitting. We give examples illustrating how formulating and analyzing the problem in its initial stages can lead to insight into how to use more general purpose design tools. We will be particularly concerned with questions concerning the scaling and symmetry of such systems.
