Abstract
Rigorous correction of certain aberrations in rotationally symmetric optical systems, in particular the axial spherical aberration, may be theoretically accomplished with aspheric surfaces. In practice, unfortunately, this is not true. To the difficulties of fabrication of an aspheric surface it is necessary to add the limitations of the mathematical representation of the aspheric profile necessary in the design stage for the tracing of rays.
