Breakdown of the Slowly Varying Amplitude Approximation: Generation of Backward Traveling Second Harmonic Light

Abstract

By numerically solving the nonlinear field equations we study how a laser pulse interacts with a nonlinear medium without making the usual slowly-varying- amplitude approximation. This interaction results in a measurable backward traveling second harmonic wave.
