Propagation-invariant beams: a ray-optical perspective

Abstract

A ray-based description of beams whose transverse shape is preserved under propagation (e.g. HG, LG, IG, Airy, Mathieu and Bessel beams) is given, which clarifies their sometimes strange behavior and shows their surprising hidden geometry.
