Abstract

We demonstrated deep subwavelength focusing using hyperbolic metamaterial. The numerical simulations and preliminary experimental results verified that hyperbolic metamaterial can focus a broad collimated beam to spot size of ~ λ0/6 using wired media design with a plasma frequency of 34.58 GHz. Focusing is achieved for both normal and oblique angled incidence. The non-magnetic design, no-cut off operation and preferred direction of propagation in these materials significantly reduces the losses in electromagnetic waves and thus makes the deep subwavelength focusing possible.
