Abstract

We show that the partial polarization of a random electromagnetic light beam has an interferometric interpretation: in two-beam interference the degree of polarization is given by the modulation strengths of the polarization Stokes parameters when the beam interferes with itself. In quantum optics an analogous description is valid for classical-like states of light.
