Light in Strongly Anisotropic Media: Towards Left-Handed Materials at Optical Frequencies

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We present a new approach to systems with negative index of refraction. The proposed system is intrinsically nonmagnetic and relies on an anisotropic dielectric constant to provide a left-handed response in a planar waveguide geometry. We describe the optical properties of the proposed design, and its realizations at different frequencies from GHz to the optical range.
