Abstract

We report the equiphase-sphere (EPS) approximation for characterizing light scattering by nonspherical and inhomogeneous particles. Our finite-difference-time-domain numerical experiments demonstrate the feasibility of using the EPS method to calculate the total-scattering-cross-section spectra for a wide range of particle geometries. Validity conditions of the EPS method are derived and validated.
