Coherent-mode representation of partially coherent imaging

Abstract

The process of image formation in optical system with partially coherent illumination is represented as a superposition of completely coherent modal images. The modal representation of a partially coherent imaging system is given. The basic concepts are illustrated by an example of calculating the image intensity distribution.
