Abstract

We demonstrate the fabrication of robust nanostructure silica photonic wires. A microstructure fiber tapered by more than two orders of magnitude retains its air-holes open while exhibiting very low loss. The nanowire is completely isolated from its environment and light can be directly coupled into it.
