Abstract

Reversible switching in 2D silicon-based photonic crystal structures is demonstrated using nematic liquid crystals. These tunable devices can be used as a platform for a number of ultracompact active optical elements, such as modulators and routers. The flexible and inexpensive fabrication processes allow for integration with existing microelectronic technology.
