Optical Switching in a Nonlinear Fiber-Loop Mirror: Effects of Polarization-Mode Dispersion

Abstract

We describe the impact of polarization-mode dispersion on the switching performance of a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Our analysis reveals that spatial randomness of residual birefringence leads to temporal power fluctuations within the switching window and reduces the switching contrast.
