Abstract

We analyze the thermal emissivity and absorbance of an inverted opal photonic crystal using transfer matrix methods. We show that by optimizing the coupling between the multi-mode radiation field of a PBG material and a spatially extended collection of atomic or electronic emitters/absorbers, we can achieve dramatic modifications of Planck’s blackbody radiation law. Using an inverted opal photonic crystal architecture, we show that is possible to obtain both passive radiation filters that totally inhibit the absorption and emission of thermal radiation for specific frequency windows and dramatic enhancement of the emission/absorption of the thermal radiation for frequencies close to the band edge of a PBG.
