Abstract

Erbium-doped transparent glass ceramics can produce copious upconversion fluorescence originating from both the glassy and nanocrystalline phases. From the optical spectroscopic data, we conclude that erbium ions in the glassy phase produce upconversion via excited state absorption, and those in the nanocrystalline phase undergo upconversion by energy transfer.
