Abstract

Polarization of image-forming light carries useful information about a scene. However such information cannot be perceived by the unaided human eye, which is polarization blind. After the pioneering work of Nobel laureate Karl von Frisch in 1949 [1], it has been shown that some animal species have visual systems that can utilize the light’s polarization to aid in navigation [2]. Man-made sensing and imaging systems can also gather polarization information. How to optimally collect and process such polarization information in order to achieve a certain specific task like enhancing detection of a target against a background with various polarization statistics is an important topic.
