Abstract

The coherence properties of sunlight were first studied by Verdet around 1869. However, his calculations and others which followed assume that the Earth is in the far zone of the Sun, an invalid assumption. We investigate Verdet’s result and illustrate a surprising property of radiation from incoherent sources.
