Abstract

We apply a mode expansion technique to the three-dimensional vectorial diffraction problem of an arbitrary electromagnetic field that is incident on a perfectly conducting, metallic layer, containing rectangular pits and holes. We study ways to increase the storage density on optical discs, and the extraordinary transmission through sub-wavelength holes.
