Abstract

We investigate the effective nonlinearity and dispersion of cylindrical waveguides with high core-cladding index contrast. We find that the nonlinearity for a sub-wavelength sized waveguide is maximal. Utilizing such waveguides, we experimentally demonstrate octave- spanning supercontinuum with 6× lower pulse energies than typically required.
