Abstract

We study intensity distribution of the light transmitted through a quasi-one dimensional random medium. Markedly non-Rayleigh distribution P(I) is found to be well fitted by the analytical formula of Ref. [1], with a single parameter g’. We show that in the passive random system g’ is uniquely related to the dimensionless conductance g. In absorbing or amplifying random media g’ becomes a function of two parameters g and la absorption or lg gain length respectively.
