Economic considerations in fiber-to-the-home deployment

Abstract

Fiber-to-the-home has been desired as an access medium to the home, since it offers nearly limitless bandwidth for future services. Yet, after 20 years, its deployment has been mostly limited to trials. We review economic factors which seem to have thwarted U. S. deployment, and speculate on future developments that can change this.
