Abstract

Electronic- and photonic-band engineering are combined in a single device, i.e. a photonic-crystal quantum cascade laser emitting at ≈ 8 µm wavelength. The combination of size reduction and vertical emission can be interesting for gas sensing applications, as well as more fundamental studies.
