Amplifying splitters

Abstract

Optical communications currently demands for lossless signal splitting along passive optical networks. This can be achieved by deploying low-cost sol-gel integrated circuits based on silica-on-silicon technology. Compact splitters are accordingly fabricated exhibiting low loss, low PDL and good uniformity; the splitters are integrated with active fibers and amplifying splitters are demonstrated.
