Conversion of continuous wave light to repeatable and controlled pulses

Abstract

Continuous-wave laser light can be converted into a series of repetitive pulses by focusing the laser beam into an absorbing dye (nigrosine); the mechanism responsible for the pulses is the scattering of light off photo-generated bubbles. The spatial and temporal distributions of the scattered light, which vary with the solvent and the incident beam intensity, were investigated.
