Abstract

We have recently introduced a novel kind of mode-locked semiconductor laser, based on an optically pumped surface-emitting semiconductor chip and a saturable semiconductor mirror in an external cavity. This type of laser offers unprecedented average output powers in the multi-watt range and multi-GHz pulse repetition rates. Latest results are reviewed.
