Abstract
3R regeneration capabilities of fiber-based signal regenerators are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to regenerators consisting of a synchronous modulator, highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), and a narrowband optical bandpass filter. Two operation schemes, one based on spectrum broadening and slicing using normal-dispersion HNLF and the other based on soliton compression and control using anomalous-dispersion HNLF, are compared.
