Abstract

A low cost in-line fiber optical variable attenuator was demonstrated by using side polished fiber and liquid crystal with low insertion loss and 25dB attenuation range. Low PDL has also been demonstrated by using nano-sized liquid crystal as an overlay. Experimental results have been analyzed using vector modal solution.
