Abstract

Multiple-scattering processes in the cloudy atmosphere are poorly understood due to 3D variability; yet they dominate the shortwave radiative transfer, hence the balance of the climate system. We show that a wealth of information about shortwave transport can be inferred from the shape of weak O2 lines in the A- or B-band. This defines a difficult, but not impossible, task for modern FTS technology.
