Abstract
Based on helical metamaterial (MM), this paper presents a novel optical isolator. The right-handed circularly polarized light (RCP) can transmit through the isolator with its polarization unchanged. The reverse propagating light due to the reflection of the latter optical devices will be left-handed circularly polarized light (LCP), which will be suppressed by the proposed isolator due to absorptions. Our design has the advantage of broad frequency ranges and high isolation contrast, moreover, neither polarizers nor driving voltage is required. We understand this phenomenon by the mechanism of helical antenna theory.
