Demonstrating a modal approach to paraxial light propagation for photonics education

Abstract

Propagation using numerical approaches is a textbook standard, yet suffers from lack of physical insight. We outline a novel modal approach to propagation, demon- strating the ease and physical insight necessary for teaching and to facilitate understanding in photonics courses.
