Abstract

Exciton polaritons are at the base of a large number of compelling phenomena, including very low threshold lasing and optical nonlinearities [1,2], Bose Einstein condensation and superfluidity [3]. These effects can be enhanced using polariton confinement and waveguiding, as proposed and realized in several structures [1,3,4]. Bloch Surface Waves (BSW) are photonic modes that exist at the interface between a truncated photonic crystal, typically a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR), and an ideally semi-infinite dielectric medium. The BSW electromagnetic field is highly concentrated near the sample surface [5], and thus BSWs are appealing for enhancing the interaction between light and the materials deposited on the sample.
