Abstract

Although the phenomenon of “freak” ocean waves has been mooted for hundreds of years, it is only relatively recently that these giant rogues waves were first recorded [1]. Since the first demonstration of optical rogue waves in 2007 in a microstructured optical fibre near the threshold of soliton-fission supercontinuum generation [2], there has been major scientific interest to understand the physical mechanisms behind the origin and development of optical rogue waves, the probability of observing them, and the type of systems capable of generating such extreme events [3].
