Abstract

Recent advances in ultrashort pulsed lasers enable the ultrafast magnetization control, which attracts remarkable attentions of both the scientific researches in solid state physics and the applications for spintronics. In particular, nonlinear optical process can induce magnetization coherently in ultrafast time scale without excess heating [1]. By using this process, coherent control of precession motion of magnetization with multi-pulse excitation has been reported [2]. The next challenge is the manipulation of dynamical magnetization as a vector. In antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials, opposite directions of spin precessions in two spin-sublattices correspond to two degenerated oscillation modes of dynamical magnetization. Here, we propose a new scheme to manipulate a polarization of magnetization vector arbitrarily by controlling those two magnetic oscillation modes independently. We demonstrate excitation of linearly or circularly polarized dynamical magnetizations by tuning the timing and polarizations of the two laser pulses interacting with an antiferromagnetic NiO crystal, based on comprehensive understanding of polarization selection rules [3].
