Increased Sensitivity in the Electro-Optic Detection of Focused Terahertz Pulses

Abstract

Electro-optic (EO) sampling in zinc blende type crystals (e.g., ZnTe, GaAs) is a common method for the coherent detection of few-cycle terahertz pulses. Via the linear EO effect, the electric field ETHz of the terahertz pulse induces a transient birefringence Δn(ETHz) in the otherwise cubic crystal. This birefringence affects the polarisation state of a copropagating femtosecond laser pulse (probe) through a phase shift "Δφ = 2π Δn d/λ (d the crystal thickness, λ the probe wavelength). The change of the polarisation state as a measure of the terahertz field ETHz may be detected using appropriate optical methods, typically a system consisting of a quarter wave plate, a polarising beam splitter, and a pair of balanced photodetectors.
