Abstract

Generation of terahertz radiation by mixing fundamental and second harmonic light in laser generated plasmas is very promising for nonlinear spectroscopy and remote sensing applications. Since the first report of Cook and Hochstrasser [1], this technique has been investigated thoroughly. However, the exact origin of this very intense THz light is still not yet fully understood. Currently, there are two models being discussed in literature, namely a four-wave mixing [1–5], and a microscopic polarization model [6, 7]. Comparisons of those models have already been carried out by several groups [4–6, 8], but there is still no solid argument to rule out one of these models. In this contribution, we present a detailed analysis of the dependence of the polarization of the emitted THz radiation on the input polarizations of fundamental and second-harmonic beams and compare our model calculations to experimental results.
