Squeezed Light for Gravitational Wave Detection

Abstract

Future gravitational wave (GW) detectors will need to be more than a hundred times more sensitive than current devices if they are to enable us to gather information about the Universe and the behaviour of the largest, most energetic, and possibly electromagnetically dark, astrophysical objects within it. Reaching this level of sensitivity will require techniques that have been developed in the field of quantum optics. Of these, the ability to generate so-called squeezed light will be the first to be put into practice.
