Micro-vs. macro-optics in free-space optical interconnects

Abstract

The relative benefits of macro- and micro-optical approaches to parallel interconnection architectures are reviewed. Macro-optics shows significant scaling advantages over micro-optics in volume, latency, and power consumption in interconnection fabrics with high minimum bisection bandwidth.
