Abstract
The ability to replicate operations on one subsystem using operations on distant subsystems is a quintessential feature of entanglement. We formalize this notion and classify the states for which it holds to shed light on quantum and classical entanglement. This leads to an operational method for quantifying the entanglement in a quantum state.
