Breakdown of the Few-Level Approximation in Collective Systems

Abstract

In contrast to single atoms, in collective systems, the vacuum couples transitions with orthogonal dipole moments. This leads to a geometry-dependent dynamics and to a breakdown of the few-level approximation in collective systems.
